Air Conditioning Facts
The four main components of your air conditioner are:
- Condenser: The condenser unit sits outside your home. Gas from the compressor is concentrated into a liquid inside the condenser unit. The gas that enters the condenser is extremely hot. The temperature is then lowered, so the gas can convert back to a liquid.
- Compressor: The compressor works inside the condenser, circulating the pressurized refrigerant, concentrating the heat, and changing the low-pressure gas to high pressure.
- Evaporator: The evaporator, located indoors, absorbs the heat from your home.
- Expansion Valve: The expansion valve controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.
These components are connected by a copper tube that handles the refrigerant. Heat is collected in the evaporator and transferred outside to the condenser. The heat is removed, and the cool air recirculates back into your home.
This process repeats itself until your home reaches the target temperature set on your thermostat.
How Do I Choose the Right Air Conditioning System for My Home?
You will first want to decide what type of AC is the best fit for your home. Our team can help recommend a quality product that meets your budget and needs.
If your AC is more than 15 years old, it likely is a single-stage model with a compressor that runs at capacity.
New air conditioners are available with single-stage, two-stage, or variable-speed compressors. A single-stage model has a compressor that always runs at full capacity. It is either on or off.
A two-stage unit runs at full speed in hot temperatures and then powers down slightly on moderate days. Running at a lower speed reduces wear and tear on parts and lowers your energy costs.
A variable-speed compressor can adjust to almost any speed in barely noticeable increments. It runs at the capacity needed to achieve the desired temperature in your home, making it the most efficient system available.
Whichever product you choose, it will be a good decision. ENERGY STAR® notes that replacing an air conditioning unit more than 10 years old with a newer model can lower your energy bills by 20 percent.
SEER and Refrigerant Changes
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio-or SEER rating-measures how much energy an air conditioning system uses to operate. A higher rating number means a more efficient operation.
Beginning in January 2023, SEER ratings for AC units will increase from 13 to 14 in northern states and 14 to 15 SEER in the South and Southwest regions of the country. Efficiency ratings were also increased for air-source heat pumps.
The new rating requirements will help create a new generation of air conditioners and heat pumps that are more efficient and eco-friendly. These systems might cost more upfront, but the payback on your investment will be quicker because of lower operating costs.
The industry is also phasing out the refrigerant R-410A and replacing it with a more environmentally friendly alternative called R-454B. The new refrigerant is being introduced starting in 2023 in newly manufactured equipment.
As a customer, you will not see a difference between the two refrigerants. There will be an ample supply of R-410A for the next 15 to 20 years if your current system needs a recharge. When you are ready for a replacement, your new system will likely use the new refrigerant.
Air Conditioning Installation and Replacement
Did you know choosing the right company to install your Goose Creek heating and cooling equipment is every bit as important as the brands you choose?
A poorly installed system can quickly start to rattle, leading to loose components and less efficiency. You face a greater risk of repair or a complete breakdown.
Our technicians receive constant hands-on training to ensure you receive the best service. They understand how to retrofit new equipment in an older house. You can trust your new system will integrate seamlessly with your ductwork and provide years of optimal service.
Not sure whether to repair or replace your older system? Here are a few signs that it might be better to invest in a new system:
- Your current system is older than 15 years and no longer protected by a warranty.
- You notice uneven cooling throughout your home.
- Your system cycles too frequently, turning on and off before it reaches the right temperature.
- Your system makes unusual noises when it runs.
- The cost of repairing your system is around half the amount it would take to replace it.
How Much Money Can You Save With a New Air Conditioner?
Our SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) energy savings calculator can help determine how much you could save on your utility bills. Simply enter your current unit’s SEER value and compare it to a newer, more efficient SEER2 unit. You can even customize it to better match your home’s system for a more accurate calculation.

“ANUBUS MECHANICAL is a really good company for HVAC needs. Charles is extremely knowledgeable and helpful when servicing and maintaining my system. I would highly recommend this company for your HVAC needs.”
“Charles was both professional and courteous. Two other companies told me I needed a new unit but Charles found and solved the issue. Would highly recommend.”
“I can honestly say this was THE ABSOLUTE best experience I have had with someone who came to look at my AC unit.
I have had my house for about 2 years now and from the beginning I have had issues with my AC unit. My insurance company sent numerous technicians who claimed to have solved the issue but failed.
Charles was the name of the technician that came on behalf of Anubis, and he was on time and professional. He kept me informed with the ordering of parts and all that he was doing to troubleshoot the issue. He even went above and beyond fixing issues that were not in the work order at no additional charge.
I am absolutely pleased with the work done. My unit works like it was new! And I would absolutely recommend using them. I was so pleased I was inspired to leave this review.
My experience was 5 stars!
Outstanding work Anubis Mechanical!”
“I have nothing but good words to say about Chuck Tavelle and the work he has done at my home. I live in a large historic property with no fewer than three HVAC systems, two of them somewhat antiquated. Chuck has kept the systems in good operational order, mapping out plans on how to systemically and more economically make repairs and upgrades, taking a long view. If there's a problem, he responds quickly via text or phone call and will be on the job in short order. He shows up when he says he's going to show up and he doesn't leave until the job is done to satisfaction. His technical knowledge is vast, but he's also very good at explaining what's going on with a system and providing clear options for repair(s) and replacement. He has an exceptional work ethic, is fair in his pricing and, when a job calls for a subcontractor, he only works with professionals who meet his own high standard. One of my systems is especially complicated and will eventually need to be replaced. The fact that it will be a challenge to address is a upside for his problem-solving mind. He's got it all! Smart, fair, punctual, hardworking, pleasant, organized, insured, bonded, tidy, honest and knows his stuff! Plus, he puts booties over his shoes when entering the house!”
